PENGASSAN faults Government contract to foreign firm
Mr Aniekan Akpan, PENGASSAN Abuja Branch Chairman, has faulted the
contracting of 21 crude oil terminals for pre-shipment inspection to a
foreign firm by the Federal Government. In an interview with the News Agency
of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday, Akpan stated that it was a drain on the
economy. Akpan added that the action was a waste of government resources in
the face of scarce resources.
“The contracting of 21 crude oil terminal for pre-shipment inspection to
Messrs Cobalt International Services Ltd, a foreign firm, is another form of
economic leakage,” he said. He noted that the action was capable of making
redundant the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), which had performed
the function before now at no cost to the government. The action, he said,
was also against the administration’s 7-point agenda and its policy of
cutting down on expenses that had no direct bearing on the economy and the
people.
“The function being contracted to the firm is nothing but duplication of the
responsibilities of DPR and a colossal waste of government’s resources.
PENGASSAN DPR branch is not against Cobalt as a firm, but we are standing up
for the cause of our country’s economy no matter who is involved,” Akpan
said.
He called on the Federal Government to withdraw the contract and to train
and retrain staff of the DPR on new technologies to enable them to perform
their responsibilities properly.
