Nigeria’s Abia State gets 46 new oil wells
Nigeria’s Abia State has joined the league of states in the Niger-Delta
enjoying high revenue from oil as the state has been credited with
additional 46 oil wells by the Federal Government.
Five other wells that are still being contested for by Abia and Rivers
States would have revenue accruing from them shared fifty-fifty by the
two states in the interim until a final decision is taken on them.
The state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Deacon
Ralph Egbu at the end of the state executive council meeting, said there
are other outstanding wells, adding that the state government would
engage a consultant who is vast on oil matters to identify those wells
and recover them for the state. He commended the Federal Government for
the action, adding that with the anticipated revenue from oil, Abia
State would have more funds for development.
The issue of oil wells in Abia that were credited to other states has
dragged for years with previous governments in the state protesting the
situation, but nothing was done. Last year, a group of youths from the
oil bearing communities of Ukwa carried out a peaceful demonstration
over the issue and threatened to stop the multi-national oil company
operating in the area unless the oil wells were ceded to Abia.
Egbu said that another issue that engaged the attention of the executive
council members was the epileptic power supply in the state.
According to him, following the statement by officials of the Power
Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in the state that it would not be able
to power the street lights recently installed in the state capital
because of inadequate supply of energy, a committee headed by the Deputy
Governor was set up to ensure the realization of the 132 kVA sub-station
under construction in Umuahia.
