Nigeria to tap from China’s experience in power generation
Nigeria may soon tap from China's experience in the power generation
sector if moves by President Umaru Yar'Adua work out. The president
recently invited a Chinese delegation to the Presidential Villa, Abuja,
for more discussion on the possibility.
Gov. Gbega Daniel of Ogun State, who led a delegation of Chinese
investors and state government officials to the Villa, told State House
correspondents that the president had expressed interest in tapping from
the Chinese experience.
The team was in Abuja to brief Yar'Adua on plans by the Chinese to
develop a free trade zone in the state. Daniel said that in the course
of discussion, the president requested that the Chinese return for
further discussion on the possibility of their investment in power
generation in the country.
He said that the Chinese had expertise in setting up small power
stations which had ultimately led to their self-sufficiency in power
generation, explaining that Nigeria would want to tap into that
experience.
The governor said that the 10,000 MW of electricity, which Nigeria was
striving to attain was just 3 % of Chinese consumption.
On the fate of his former colleagues now being prosecuted by the EFCC
for corruption, Daniel said it was justifiable because corruption was
totally condemnable.
