Nigeria needs $ 90bn to restore power
Chairman, House Committee on Power and Steel, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, has
said Nigeria needs about N105 tn to restore and stabilize the power
sector.
Elumelu said a recent study revealed that N 105 tn ($ 90 bn) would be
needed to generate 60,000 MW of electricity.
He said the leadership of the House of Representatives made three
recommendations towards solving the problems in the power sector.
"The recommendations were: the in-put, out-put and out-come", the
committee chairman said.
Elumelu urged Nigerians to "write to us by way of memorandum. As we are
working on the proposed budget, whatever they send would form part of
the in-put. What we bring out becomes part of the in-put, having passed
the budget which is the out-put.”
"We now go on weekly or monthly bases to check the outcome, the outcome
is the implementation by the executive. We are backed by law to carry
out oversight functions, which include such issues of how funds released
to government organizations are spent", Elumelu explained.
